What is Preventative Health?

Preventative health focuses on maintaining health and reducing the likelihood of disease before symptoms develop. It includes actions taken by individuals, healthcare professionals and public health organisations to keep people well throughout life.

Preventive healthcare is not a single event. It is an ongoing process that begins before birth and continues throughout childhood, adulthood and older age.

Examples include childhood immunisations, cancer screening programs, blood pressure checks, healthy eating, regular physical activity and smoking cessation.

Why this matters

Prevention gives you the opportunity to act before disease develops, rather than waiting until you become unwell.

Why Prevention Matters?

Many of Australia's leading causes of illness—including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers—develop gradually over many years. Often there are no symptoms during the early stages.

Preventive healthcare aims to identify risk factors early and reduce the chance of disease developing or progressing. In many cases, early detection also allows treatment to begin sooner, improving long-term outcomes.

Even small improvements in health behaviours, maintained over many years, can have meaningful benefits.

Why this matters

Prevention gives you the opportunity to act before disease develops, rather than waiting until you become unwell.

Prevention Across the Lifecourse

Preventive healthcare changes throughout life.

As a child, vaccinations and developmental checks are important.

During adulthood, preventive care may focus on blood pressure, cardiovascular risk, cervical screening, bowel screening and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits.

Later in life, preventive care expands to include bone health, falls prevention, hearing, vision and maintaining independence.

Your preventive healthcare needs will continue to change as you age.

Why this matters

The right preventive care depends on your age, sex and personal risk factors. That's why personalised recommendations are so important.

Your Role in Preventative Health?

Your healthcare team plays an important role in prevention, but you also play an active part.

Understanding what preventive care is recommended for your age and circumstances allows you to have informed discussions with your GP and make decisions that align with your health goals.

Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools in prevention.

Why this matters

Understanding your health helps you ask better questions, make informed decisions and get more value from every healthcare appointment.
