Food: Your Body's Fuel

The food you eat contains nutrients that provide your body with the raw materials it needs to survive. Carbohydrates, fats and proteins can all be used to produce energy, although they each enter the process in slightly different ways.

Why Oxygen Matters and Why Energy Production Never Stops

Oxygen is essential for producing energy efficiently.

When oxygen is available, your cells can extract much more energy from the nutrients you eat. This process is known as aerobic metabolism and provides enough energy for most everyday activities.

During short bursts of intense exercise, your muscles may temporarily produce energy faster than oxygen can be supplied. In these situations, your body switches to a less efficient process called anaerobic metabolism. This allows you to keep moving for a short time but produces much less ATP and contributes to muscle fatigue.

Even while you sleep, your body continues producing energy. Your heart keeps beating, your lungs continue breathing, your brain remains active and your cells constantly repair and renew themselves.

Because your body needs energy every minute of every day, energy production never truly stops. Instead, it adjusts to meet your changing needs—from resting quietly to exercising vigorously.
